Debbie Stovell - A Cornish perspective

Born in Coventry I came to Cornwall to start my first post as Home Economics teacher in Fowey School in 1981. I now live between Truro and Redruth with my husband and retired from teaching in September 2018.

I took up painting in 2006 after attending an evening class in life drawing. Other than that, my training is limited to an  'A' level in Art gained at school.  The evening classes gave me the confidence to renew my interest in Art which had been on hold whilst bringing up our three children. Now I cannot stop painting and every spare minute finds me in front of a blank canvas wondering what will emerge next?

My painting helped me through the bereavement of my Dad, who had died of Motor Neurone Disease and it taught me the therapeutics of being lost in painting and the value of Art as a therapy; it was wonderful.

Using oils or pastels, palette knife and brush, my subjects are anything that I have an emotional link with; usually seascapes, landscapes, trees and animals on canvas, paper and board. I still enjoy Life drawing and relish the challenge of a portrait.

Although I work in a variety of sizes, I am enthralled to work on large canvasses where freedom reigns. Most of all, I like to experiment with colour, not  wanting to be restricted  to a certain palette.

I paint mostly from photos, but recently after visits to The Eden Project,I have fallen into a more free, almost surreal form of painting; much more creative. It is almost a reflection of my present time of life, where freedom and liberation reign in my very recent early retirement. I feel this compliments my usual contemporary style of painting as both reflect my personality.

I paint and sketch because I am driven to do so. If my work moves someone, in a beautiful and meaningful way, then I feel that I have done my duty to share a God given talent.
